We all know about the Penn State Scandal I feel safe to say. The real question is who is the man that the media has highlighted and was recently convicted? Was it Gerry or Jerry Sandusky? Doesn’t matter right? Same name. Well, sadly people of Twitter and other social media sites don’t know the difference. Sportscaster Gerry Sandusky has been taking thousands of hate tweets on his personal twitter account despite him looking nothing like the convicted pedofile and even stating in his twitter profile,
“I am Gerry with a G. Baltimore sportscaster. No relation to the former Penn State coach. Views expressed are my own.”
I mean, how stupid can people get? Not only are they clearly wrong, but think about this. If you were facing as many crimes as the Penn State coach was, wouldn’t you delete your twitter, let alone, not be able to respond to anyone either way? Most would think that. The twitter profile thumbnail should be enough to tell most people they have the wrong profile, maybe the different name, who really knows what people were (and still are) thinking.
This shows the blind evil in the online community as they will/can bandwagon onto a completely innocent man, but also shows the general misuse of the social media tools available to the mass public. This coincides with one of the problems with today’s standard media model. Mass media sources just feed the public with sometimes biased and (often) close minded information, giving most of the public little room for free and independent thought. I mean, they can’t even spell the convicted child molester’s name correctly or check your facts, point proven. The sportscaster Sandusky even has a link to his homepage from his twitter account, which again has nothing to do with Penn State, little boys or really anything related to the facts around the Penn State Scandal.
To not give you a one sided story, I’ll tell you about the flip side to the coin. Gerry Sandusky (does not like little boys) has been bombarded online and offline, but many social media outlets and blogs have taken it upon themselves to show support for him and his family. At least some people know how to connect names and professions correctly out there. Sandusky (sportscaster) has even written a blog post about all the hardships he has encountered and how he handled them. Good job, man. Now, if you’re stubborn and still don’t believe me – why would Jerry, with a ‘J,’ Sandusky be tweeting to random people about unrelated topics to his trial, during his trial and even afterwards? In response, since this is apparently an acceptable behavior to a lot of people, I will be personally contacting every Lee (Harvey) Oswald online and wondering why he killed JFK, hell, why stop there? Any John (Wilkes) Booth out there, you’re next!
